After the End is a documentary in development about people preparing for life after the fall of industrial society.
Inspired by the Peak Oil Movement and films like the Collapse, we started researching how groups were preparing for life after oil.
During our initial research we were fascinated by the survivalist subtext of the Peak Oil Movement and how similar the pure survival techniques were to other groups ranging from the Mormon Church and Rapture Christians, to Left Wing Environmentalists, traditional Right Wing Survivalists, and even Zombie enthusiasts.
In the film we plan to juxtapose characters who are involved in survivalist subcultures on both the left and the right wing to highlight similarities in their philosophies, like owning guns and bug out bags.
We will cover them in a Verite style, and weave their stories together in post-production. We hope to illustrate the synergy in seemingly divergent apocalypse subcultures, while exploring why such a cross section of the public feels compelled to prepare for the end times in what ever flavor it comes. Employing a variety of editing techniques, animation, music, and fictional interstitials we will also illuminate the viewer about real survival techniques, as well as the scientific arguments specific to peak oil.
